The Ukrainian Apostrophe
The apostrophe (') is punctuation — not one of the 33 alphabet letters.
Ukrainian uses the apostrophe after a consonant before я, ю, є, ї, or sometimes й — to show the vowel is pronounced separately. Do not confuse with Ь (soft sign), which softens the preceding consonant without adding a vowel sound.
п'ять — five — apostrophe separates syllables
сім'я — family
м'ясо — meat
об'єднання — union
On Enhanced layout: apostrophe is Shift+` (the ₴ key). In compose mode: type p'yat for п'ять.
Unicode vs Fancy Fonts
Ukrainian Cyrillic letters are standard Unicode (U+0400–U+04FF). Copy from KeyLingo into Gmail, Google Docs, Telegram, and messaging apps — Noto, Arial, and Calibri support all 33 letters including Ґ, Є, І, Ї. Decorative Unicode styles usually only transform basic Latin; Cyrillic stays plain until a dedicated Ukrainian font generator ships.

Ukrainian uses a 33-letter Cyrillic alphabet. Unique letters: Ґ, Є, І, Ї. Focus letters for learners: Й, Ь, and the apostrophe ('). Standard Ukrainian does not use Russian ё, ы, э, or ъ.
Cyrillic in Ukraine
Ukrainian Cyrillic developed from Old East Slavic writing. Modern orthography was standardized in the 19th–20th centuries, distinguishing Ukrainian from Russian and Belarusian through unique letters and spelling rules.
Enhanced vs Phonetic Layout
Ukrainian (Enhanced) is the Windows/macOS default (KBDUR1) — the official ЙЦУКЕН layout with ґ, є, і, ї. Phonetic maps Cyrillic to QWERTY by sound for diaspora learners — not a single OS standard, but easier on US hardware.

Ukrainian keyboard, input methods, and privacy — answered clearly.
How do I type Ukrainian on an English keyboard?
Use Latin → Cyrillic compose: type pryvit, dyakuyu, ukraina and press space after each word. Or switch to Phonetic virtual keyboard where QWERTY keys map to similar Cyrillic letters.
What is the difference between Enhanced and Phonetic?
Enhanced (ЙЦУКЕН) is the official Windows/macOS default layout with correct positions for ґ, є, і, ї. Phonetic maps letters to QWERTY by sound — easier for beginners abroad, but not one standardized OS layout.
How many letters are in the Ukrainian alphabet?
Thirty-three letters in modern Ukrainian Cyrillic. Unique letters: Ґ, Є, І, Ї. Standard Ukrainian does not use Russian ё, ы, э, or ъ.
How is Ukrainian Cyrillic different from Russian?
Ukrainian has Ґ, Є, І, Ї which Russian standard orthography lacks. Russian has ё, ы, э, ъ which Ukrainian lacks. Keyboard layouts differ — use Ukrainian Enhanced, not Russian ЙЦУКЕН, for Ukrainian text.
What is transliteration vs translation?
Transliteration changes script (pryvit → привіт). Translation changes meaning (hello → привіт). KeyLingo compose mode transliterates — it does not translate sentences.
How do I type ї (yi)?
In compose mode, type yi. On Enhanced layout, ї is on the ] key. Use the letter strip for one-click insert.
How do I type the Ukrainian apostrophe?
Type ' in compose mode (p'yat → п'ять). On Enhanced layout, apostrophe is Shift+` (backtick). On Phonetic layout, ' is on the ` key. Use the strip button for quick insert.
How do I type ґ?
In compose mode, type gh or g'. On Enhanced layout, ґ is Shift+U. On Phonetic layout, ґ is Shift+G.
Can I use this on mobile?
Yes. Use the virtual keyboard sheet or Latin compose mode. Touch-friendly letter strip for Ґ, Є, І, Ї, and apostrophe.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser — zero server uploads.
What is українська клавіатура?
Українська клавіатура means Ukrainian keyboard — software or online layout for typing Cyrillic Ukrainian text.
Will stylish Unicode text preserve Ukrainian Cyrillic?
Most decorative Unicode styles only transform basic A–Z. Cyrillic stays plain — type full Ukrainian text here; see Russian Font Generator for partial Cyrillic styling until Ukrainian styles ship.
