Lithuanian typing guide
Practical tips for Lithuanian input — layouts, accents, and common questions answered below.
What Is a Lithuanian Keyboard?
A Lithuanian keyboard (Lietuviška klaviatūra) lets you type the 32-letter Lithuanian alphabet, including nine special letters with diacritics — ą, č, ę, ė, į, š, ų, ū, ž. KeyLingo combines virtual keyboards, Easy Accents compose, and diacritic checking in one private workspace.
How to Type Lithuanian Characters Online
Open KeyLingo Lithuanian Keyboard and use Easy Accents: Quick Compose (a= → ą, e== → ė, u== → ū, z= → ž). Switch to Virtual Keyboard for Programmers (AltGr on number row) or Standard KBDLT2 layout used in Lithuania.

Lithuanian Alphabet Guide (32 Letters)
Lithuanian has 32 official letters in Latin script. Q, W, and X are not part of the alphabet (they appear only in foreign names and loanwords). Y (i ilgoji) is a full alphabet letter sorted between Į and J. The nine diacritic letters mark distinct sounds — not optional accents.
Ogonek, Caron, Dot, and Macron
Ogonek (ą, ę, į, ų) marks historical nasal vowels. Caron/háček (č, š, ž) marks palatalized consonant sounds. Dot above (ė) marks a long /eː/ vowel distinct from e and ę. Macron (ū) marks vowel length. Each diacritic is a separate letter in spelling.
Programmers vs Standard (KBDLT2) Layouts
Lithuanian (Programmers) keeps US QWERTY — special letters via AltGr+1–8 and AltGr+= (ą–ž), AltGr+E for €. Recommended for diaspora and developers. Lithuanian Standard (KBDLT2) remaps the letter rows for ISO keyboards used in Lithuania.
Lithuanian vs Latvian Keyboards
Both are Baltic languages using Latin script, but letters differ. Lithuanian uses ą, ę, ė, į, ų, ū, č, š, ž. Latvian uses ā, ē, ī, ū, ģ, ķ, ļ, ņ, š, č, ž. Do not use Latvian layout for Lithuanian text — ē and ā are not Lithuanian letters.
Lithuanian: ą, ę, ė, į, ų, ū + č, š, ž
Latvian: ā, ē, ī, ū + ģ, ķ, ļ, ņ + č, š, ž
Do not mix layouts — ė and ā are not interchangeable

How do I type ą, ę, ė, į on a QWERTY keyboard?
Use Easy Accents Quick Compose: a= for ą, e= for ę, e== for ė, i= for į. On Windows, install Lithuanian (Programmers) for AltGr+1 (ą), AltGr+3 (ę), AltGr+4 (ė), AltGr+5 (į).
e is a short mid vowel. ę (e-ogonek) is a nasal vowel — common in endings like dieną → dienę. ė (e-dot) is a long vowel — saulė (sun), mergaitė (girl). Compose: e= → ę, e== → ė.
What is the difference between u, ū, and ų?
u is a short vowel. ū (macron) marks length — būti (to be). ų (ogonek) is a nasal vowel — common in accusative endings. Compose: u= → ų, u== → ū.
Programmers or Standard KBDLT2 layout?
Programmers keeps US QWERTY punctuation — ideal for coding and diaspora on English keyboards. Standard KBDLT2 matches ISO keyboards sold in Lithuania with remapped letter positions.
Does Lithuanian use Q, W, and X?
Not in native words. The official alphabet has 32 letters without Q, W, or X. They appear in foreign names (Washington) and loanwords. Our QWERTY layouts still include Q/W/X for mixed typing.
Is this a translation tool?
No. KeyLingo helps you type Lithuanian characters. It does not translate English to Lithuanian.
Can I use this on mobile?
Yes. Easy Accents is the default on mobile. Use the accent dock or virtual keyboard sheet. Disable OS autocorrect if = shortcuts conflict.
How is Lithuanian different from Latvian typing?
Lithuanian uses ogonek (ą, ę, į, ų) and ė with a dot. Latvian uses macrons on ā, ē, ī, ū and soft consonant letters ģ, ķ, ļ, ņ. Shared letters č, š, ž exist in both but keyboard layouts differ.
Will Unicode stylish text preserve Lithuanian letters?
Most Unicode decorative fonts only transform basic A–Z. Lithuanian letters ą, č, ę, ė, į, š, ų, ū, ž usually stay plain. Use a dedicated Lithuanian Font Generator for styled output with accent preservation.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. Everything runs locally in your browser — zero server uploads.
