Trema (diaeresis) — native Dutch
Shows separate vowels: coöperatie, geïnteresseerd, reünie, creëren. On US-International keyboards: press " then the vowel (" + e → ë).
Trema vs German umlaut
German umlaut changes sound (schön, über). Dutch trema marks a syllable break — the vowels are pronounced separately.
Loanword accents
French and other loanwords may use acute accents: café, résumé, naïef. Press ' then the vowel in TypeIt mode, or e' in Quick Compose for é.
When trema is optional
In some common words trema is often dropped in informal writing (e.g. coopereert), but official spelling requires it in coöperatie. The checker uses standard forms.
